ECHOES OF AMAZING GRACE

‘ Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me

On a barstool in a tavern sat a woman
The years had etched their mark upon her face
In her glass ice was slowly melting
By request the band began ‘Amazing Grace’

People just kept talking about their troubles
The band was aching for some rock and roll
When the woman on the barstool started singing
From the deepest reaches of her soul

Above the sounds of mumbled conversations
Scraping chairs and laughter sharp and loud
Rose her voice and she turned the room to silence
As that song touched every person in the crowd

Head held high she sat upon the barstool
She sang the song as if held in a trance
One by one the people stopped to listen
To a woman sing of yet another chance

The final note still echoed in the barroom
And faded like a ghost without a form
Silence rushed in before the thunder
Like hope rushes in before the storm
Like hope rushes in before the storm

‘ Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
That saved a wretch like me
